A downloadable game

This game is in open beta. Find out how you can help below.

Welcome to Precarious Prep.

Something dark is going on at Precarious Preparatory School, and one detective - your GM - needs somebody on the inside. In the daytime you'll take classes, get to know the students and faculty, figure out who you can trust. The better you do in class, the faster you'll level up. At night you'll investigate the campus, search for clues, and unlock puzzles. Report your discoveries to the detective to gain points.

Expand Your Horizons

Instead of having 6 universal stats, Precarious Prep uses a curriculum - the stats your character takes on are determined by the course load you pick up each trimester. The better you do in classes, the more firepower you’ll have in your investigations. Classes can be fully relevant, partially relevant, or irrelevant to the checks you need to make throughout the game, so coordinate with your team and round out your education with a variety of skills.

Avoid Prying Eyes

While there is combat in this game, it’s expensive, blunt and brutal. Therefore, a core aspect of the game is stealth. Keep quiet, travel lightly, and stick to the shadows to avoid confrontations. Every NPC is a suspect at first, so players will have a Suspicion score. Higher suspicion scores make stealth checks more difficult, so keep it manageable for as long as possible.

Open Beta Testing

This game is currently in an open beta testing phase. Feedback, suggestions, comments - all of it is appreciated. Below I’ve included a list of features I plan on revising in the upcoming beta editions.

In addition, I want to create a robust library of mods, ranging from light additions to heavy substitutions, to add variety and character to any campaign. To this end, players are encouraged to send in any homebrew campaign ideas & mechanics that your group comes up with so that it can be added to the module library.

Upcoming Developments (v0.2 - TBD)

Fix in GM Manual:

  • Checks: Look at the structure of how checks are made in different contexts. Possibly build a comprehensive list of all types of checks in the game and build a flowchart to visualize steps in average turn.
  • Character Sheets: These need a lot of work.
  • Trimesters: The flow of time needs to be smoothed out. Minimize timed checks.
  • Equipment: fill out a more comprehensive list. Add a brief equipment builder
  • Consumables: fill out a more comprehensive list. Add a brief consumable builder.
  • Expand NPC builder.

Potential secondary booklets:

  • Dungeon Builder: A book giving isolated chunks of map, explanations and roll tables showing how to stitch them together, how to create your own.
  • Module Zines: In addition to having a full curated online library of modules for the game, highlight the most interesting fan-submitted homebrew modules in a compilation magazine every once in a while

Documents Needed For Itch Page:

  • Character Sheet (google sheets)
  • Module Library
